NEW DELHI: On this day, February 7, in 1999, India’s spin legend Anil Kumble became only the second bowler and the first Indian to claim all 10 wickets in an innings of a Test match. Kumble achieved this ‘unthinkable feat’ in the Delhi Test at the Feroz Shah Kotla ground (now Arun Jaitley Stadium) against arch-rivals Pakistan.
Prior to leg-spinner Kumble, England’s Jim Laker held the record of dismissing all 10 batters in an innings of a Test match. Laker achieved this incredible feat in 1956 against Australia.
Kumble bowled 26.3 overs, including 9 maidens, and swept the Pakistan batting ilne-up in front of a jam-packed stadium. He conceded just 74 runs in his spell.

Batting first, India posted 252 on the board. In reply, Pakistan could manage only 174, in their first innings, thanks to a four-wicket burst by Kumble and three-wicket haul by Harbhajan Singh.
In the second innings, Sadagoppan Ramesh’s 96 and an unbeaten 62 by Sourav Ganguly took India to 339.

Kumble then rattled the Pakistan line-up and sent all their 10 batters packing to register his name in the record books and hand India a resounding 212-run win.
Kumble, fondly known as ‘Jumbo’ among his fans and teammates, was adjudged the ‘Player of the Match’.
