NEW DELHI: One of India’s star weightlifters and two-time Commonwealth Games (CWG) gold medallist, Khumukcham Sanjita Chanu, has failed the dope test for an anabolic steroid drostanolone, and has been provisionally suspended by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA), TOI learnt on Friday.
Manipur’s Sanjita was tested in-competition by NADA’s dope control officers (DCOs) at the Gujarat National Games held in September-October last year. Her urine sample returned positive for drostanolone. She has been provisionally suspended from the date of her sample collection.
The weightlifting competitions at the National Games were held at the Mahatma Mandir complex in Gandhinagar from September 28 to October 5. Sanjita had secured a silver medal in the women’s 49kg category event held on September 30. Tokyo Olympics silver medallist, Mirabai Chanu, had topped the podium in the same weight division.
Sanjita’s case will now be heard by NADA’s anti-doping disciplinary panel (ADDP) and, if found guilty, she will be banned for four years. As a consequence of her dope failure, she will be stripped of her silver medal won at the National Games.
It’s been learnt that her dope-positive report was received by NADA about a week back.
Sanjita holds the CWG record of lifting 84 kg in the snatch event in the 53kg weight category. She had been previously suspended by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) in May 2018 after testing positive for testosterone. But she was cleared of doping charges in 2020 after the IWF admitted to “mixing-up” her sample numbers due to an administrative mistake. No explanation was offered by the IWF for irregularities at the time of the analysis of Sanjita’s sample.
Drostanolone has been prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) at-all-times in the category of ‘anabolic agents’ under section S1 of the Wada list.
According to the US-based National Library of Medicine (NLM), drostanolone “medically was used in breast cancer treatment and, in addition, is often used in sport, bodybuilding, and powerlifting as a performance enhancer, while providing increased protein synthesis, which reflects in the gain of lean muscle mass tissue and aids recovery”.
The anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) was in the news recently when the ADDP had imposed a four-year ban and a fine of Rs 50,000 on Mumbai-based athletics coach, Mickey Menezes, for injecting a prohibited substance into his trainee Kirti Bhoite, who is serving a two-year ban.
