NEW DELHI: The India-Australia rivalry is famous for it’s verbal duels, sledging and mind games but it is not just confined to the cricket field as the one incident was witnessed on air when commentators Dinesh Karthik and Mark Waugh got into a banter during the first day of the first Test in Nagpur.
India got off to a flier after bowling out Australia for 177 and were 15/0 in the third over when Karthik made a prediction, “I’m coming in early to make a prediction, I strongly feel India will bat once and only once in this Test match.”
Waugh wasted no time to reply: “We’ll see about that DK, we’ll see about that.”
Karthik remained adamant in his prediction: “Mark my words Mark.”
Waugh showed his apprehensions to echo DK’s comments: “What time is it. It’s five past three. I’ll write that in my diary. He could be right. It’s not going to be easy, it’s not going to be a stroll in the park.”
Karthik said: “But at the same time, it’s not as tough as the Aussie batters made it out to be either.”
Waugh: “All I’m saying is never judge a pitch until two sides have bat. Let’s see how things unfold. It’s a big session, Australia won’t let India get away. This Indian Test batters not as good as some of the Australians. I can’t see two guys averaging 60.”
Karthik: “Well there was just one there in India, that average 60.”
Waugh: “Rohit Sharma class player, Virat Kohli world class, Pujara Thor in the side.”
Former India head coach Ravi Shastri also joined in the conversation and reminded Waugh about his prediction he made during India’s last tour Down Under. “I remember a prediction he made when we were 36 all out in Adelaide in Australia when he said ‘India will get hammered 4-0’. Keep predicting Mark!”
Waugh said: “I probably wasn’t the only one predicting that though. I can’t actually remember that prediction either Ravi just quietly. I don’t remember myself saying that.”
The first day of the opening Test saw the hosts outplay their opponents in all departments of the game. Ravindra Jadeja’s five-wicket haul on his return after a injury layoff and Ravichandran Ashwin’s three wickets helped India bowl out Australia for 177 in the first innings.
In reply, India were 77 for one at stumps, with skipper Rohit Sharma on 56 and Ashwin, yet to score, at the crease. India still trail Australia by 100 runs.
