India vs Bangladesh: Rohit Sharma and Navdeep Saini ruled out of second Test, confirms BCCI | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: Rohit Sharma‘s thumb injury hasn’t recovered sufficiently for him to be available for India’s second Test against Bangladesh, as the BCCI confirmed on Tuesday that the skipper will continue to sit out, along with fast bowler Navdeep Saini.
Rohit, who suffered the left thumb injury while attempting a catch in the slips during the second ODI against Bangladesh, “is under the care of the BCCI Medical Team,” said the Indian cricket board in a press release.
KL Rahul stood in as captain in the first Test and will continue to do so for the second and final game of the series as well.
“The Medical Team is of the opinion that the injury needs some more time to heal completely before the Indian captain can bat and field with full intensity. He will continue his rehab and will not be available for the second and final Test against Bangladesh,” the BCCI statement further read.
The Indian team management may not want to risk playing Rohit ahead of a busy home season lined up, with Sri Lanka and New Zealand visiting for a limited-overs tour next month, followed by the high-profile Test series against Australia.
Saini’s muscle strain has ruled him out as well and “the fast bowler will now report to the NCA for further management of his injury”.
Saini’s injury does raise a few questions on his fitness. He represented India A in the two games in Bangladesh ahead of the Tests and was deemed fit. He did not play the first Test, though.
India won the first Test by 188 runs.
India’s updated squad for 2nd Test: KL Rahul (c), Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara (VC), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant (wk), KS Bharat (wk), Ravichandran Ashwin, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Shardul Thakur, Mohd. Siraj, Umesh Yadav, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Saurabh Kumar, Jaydev Unadkat
