India are the holders, having won the last 3 Border-Gavaskar Trophy series.
This series will also be India captain Rohit Sharma‘s first big challenge as Test captain. Since he took over as all-formats captain in February 2022, Rohit has played only 2 Tests.
Ahead of the first Test, which begins at 9:30 AM IST on February 9, Thursday, here are the big records and landmarks that beckon some of the individual players:
# Virat Kohli needs 64 more runs to get to a total of 25000 international runs. He is currently sixth in the all-time list, with 24,936 international runs. Virat has so far played 490 international matches for India and has smashed a total of 74 centuries and 129 half centuries
# As and when Virat completes the remaining 64 runs that will take him to 25000 international runs, he will become just the second Indian batter to do so, after Sachin Tendulkar. Sachin leads the all-time charts, with 34,357 runs, which he scored in 664 international matches, with the help of 100 international centuries and 164 half-centuries
# Cheteshwar Pujara (1893 runs at an average of 54.08, including five hundreds and ten fifties in 20 Tests) needs 107 runs to complete 2,000 runs and to become the fourth Indian batsman after Sachin Tendulkar (3630), VVS Laxman (2434) and Rahul Dravid (2143) to accomplish the feat against Australia in Tests.
# R Ashwin needs just 1 more wicket to complete a haul of 450 Test wickets. As and when he gets to that mark, Ashwin will become just the 9th bowler in Test cricket history to get to 450 Test wickets.
# If Ashwin gets 1 wicket in the first India vs Australia Test in Nagpur, he will become the fastest to get to 450 Test wickets. Ashwin has so far played 88 Test matches and is 9th on the overall list of most wicket-takers in Test cricket history, right behind Australia’s Nathan Lyon, who has 460 Test wickets in 115 matches.
# If he takes 6 wickets in the first Test, right arm off spinner, Nathan Lyon (94 at 34.75 in 22 matches) will achieve the distinction of completing 100 wickets in Tests against India. He will be the first Australian bowler and the third overall after England’s James Anderson (139 at 24.89 in 35 Tests) and Muttiah Muralidaran (105 at 32.61 in 22) to accomplish this feat against India in Tests.
# Both Muralidaran and Lyon have produced seven five-wicket hauls in Tests against India. With another instance of five wickets in an innings in the Nagpur Test/forthcoming series, Lyon could establish a new record.
# Steve Smith needs 1 more century vs India in Tests to equal Sachin Tendulkar on 9 centuries in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (from 1996-97 onwards). Sachin in Tests vs Australia from 1996-97 onwards had scored 9 centuries in 34 Tests, which is the overall record in this rivalry, since 1996-97. Smith so far has 8 centuries in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in 28 innings (14 Tests). With 2 centuries in this series, Smith can break Sachin’s record. Overall, in Tests vs Australia, Sachin had scored 11 centuries in 39 Tests and is the all-time leading Indian run-getter in Tests vs the Aussies.
