NEW DELHI: India recorded a hard-fought four-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the second ODI to seal the series 2-0 with one match to go. Mohammed Siraj (3/30) and Kuldeep Yadav (3/51) set up India’s win followed by KL Rahul‘s unbeaten valiant knock of 64.
With this victory, India were also relieved of holding the unwanted record of most defeats in the history of ODI cricket. Sri Lanka suffered their 437th loss to go past India’s record of 436 defeats in the ODIs.
Siraj struck early before Kuldeep triggered the middle order collapse as Sri Lanka bundled out for 215 in 39.4 overs. In response, India endured a tough time after being reduced to 86/4 in the 15th over.
But KL Rahul bailed out the team from precarious position with two crucial partnerships with Hardik Pandya (36) and Axar Patel (21) as India reached the target in 43.2 overs.
Sri Lanka now also equalled New Zealand’s record of most defeats against an opponent in ODIs. This was Sri Lanka’s 95th defeat against India while New Zealand also have 95 losses against Australia.
When it comes to T20Is, Sri Lanka again feature on the top in the list of most defeats in the format and against a single opponent. They ended up on the losing side on 94 occasions whereas their 19 defeats against India is the highest vs single opponent.
