The 2022 FIFA World Cup continued Wednesday with Group C at the forefront, as Mexico defeated Saudi Arabia at Qatar’s Lusail Stadium. While Mexico won the game, 2-1, both teams failed to advance to the knockout round.

Simultaneously, Argentina took down Poland in another Group C match, with both teams advancing. Earlier, Tunisia defeated France and Australia defeated Denmark in a pair of Group D matches.

Saudi Arabia faced its 19th different opponent, Mexico, in its 19th World Cup game.

3′: Swallowed up

Mexico had a chance to strike first in the opening moments before Saudi Arabia goalkeeper Mohammed Khalil Al Owais corralled forward Alexis Vega‘s shot attempt.

14′: A tad high

Saudi Arabia nearly struck first, but midfielder Mohamed Kanno‘s kick was a little high of the net.

It’s a physical one

With bodies draped around the Saudia Arabia net, Mexico’s Orbelin Pineda attempted a contested header off a pass from Hirving Lozano but didn’t get the angle and missed.

It was a half of missed opportunities, the last one coming from Saudi Arabia midfielder Ali Al-Hassan.

There was no score at halftime.

47′: GOAL

Mexico got the first score of the game when forward Henry Martin smacked in the close-up goal.

Shortly after striking first, Mexico scored once more. This time, midfielder Luis Chavez punched through a kick to give Mexico a 2-0 lead.

56′: ALMOST another

Already riding high from their two quick goals to begin the second half, Mexico nearly had another when Lozano smacked in a score. The goal was called back, though, for offside.

78′: Mexico continues to attack

Already up 2-0, Mexico continues to put pressure on Saudi Arabia’s net. Its latest attack saw defender Edson Alvarez get his shot blocked near the net.

87′: Another almost

Looking to add to its lead for the sake of advancing, Mexico forward Uriel Antuna had his goal ruled offside. Mexico still led 2-0.

90+5′: Not done yet!

Saudi Arabia got on the board late in the second half when forward Salem Al-Dawsari punched in a goal. The score wasn’t able to spark a rally, though, as Saudi Arabia lost 2-1.
